The workshop is aimed at presenting an overview of conservation concepts and strategies.
The workshop is designed for fourth and final year B.Arch students who are doing research/thesis on heritage
conservation, Architects who are doing heritage-related projects, Interior designers, and other design
professionals who are interested in heritage-sensitive solutions.
Our aim and objective of hosting this event was to create an interest and awareness towards heritage and conservation among the undergraduate students studying architecture. We think it is crucial for budding architects and planners to understand the importance of heritage before beginning their journey in the field of architecture.
The success of any architect or planner is measured not just by use of innovative practices but in how they are able to create malleable spaces that cater to the community and the city without disrupting the identity of the place. A holistic understanding of heritage -natural, built and cultural is crucial to maintain a balance when we are designing, conserving buildings and planning or expanding cities.
Ar. Sujatha Shankar spoke in detail about the colonial heritage of Madras by showcasing
examples of Indo Saracenic and Art Deco in our city. She peppered the talk with videos to keep the students
interested. The talk was followed by a heritage walk by MR. Steve Borgia, Honory Curator of the Tamil Nadu
Police Museum. He spoke about the journey of conserving the buildings and converting this building into
a museum. He and his team member Mr. Santhosh helped with the logistics of using the facilities at the
Tamil Nadu Police Museum. The curator of the Museum is Mr. Bharatraj who helped us with the audio video
presentation. Tea and samosa were arranged for the participants. We had 26 registered participants for
day 1, but a few interested people walked in during the session.
