Thesis Ar. Akshaya imparted information on pallipadai and the involved communities. Talked about the traditions and rituals. She stated that it has a connection to the well-known historical book Ponniyin Selvan. She said there were three Pallipadas. Adithya Cholan, Pallipadai Arnjaya Cholan, Pallipadai panchavan madevi.
Additionally, she discussed on Every stage involved in making of pallipadai, from the careful selection of materials to the deft hands that bring them to life, represents age-old customs and the vivid culture they belonged to. And also, she shared the proposal and her experience during the study.
Dissertation: The dissertation topic discussed was Streets and Stories of Madurai Nayaks. She gave us an introduction to the topic and later walked through the presentation, where she explained the boundaries and streets of Madurai during the Nayak region showcased the maps and explained the various street names and the festivals related to it. And concluded with the past and present comparison of the streets Of Madurai. Then Ar.Akshaya clarified the doubts of student’s dissertation process.
Conservation Studio-3 : Konerirajapuram Regional study ( Team work of Batch 2018)
Ar. Aakshaya gave a short glimpse about the rural study. The site chosen for the study was konnerirajapuram, Kumbakonam. She gave an introduction and highlighted about the architectural aspects such as the different typologies and methods of construction noticed in the village. She spoke about the interactions with the villagers, Intangible cultural heritage, rituals, association with the water structures and the significance of mud architecture prevailed in the village.
An illustrative lecture featuring a number of projects done by Abha Narain Lambah was presented. The nuances the team faced during each project was shared providing insights regarding the process of conservation.
A Brief description of the Projects such as the Chamba Lhakhang (Temple) at Basgo, Ladakh, Quila Mubarak at Patial, Mughal Serais in Punjab, Moorish Mosque at Punjab, Bharatpur State Museum at Rajasthan, Bikaner house at Delhi, Kala Ghoda Art District, Jewish Synagogue at Mumbai, David Sassoon library at Mumbai etc were shown.
This event featured Ar. Hiranya's presentation of a regional study studio. The study was conducted in the Erode - Jambai region. She gave a brief overview of the region, she guided through the presentation, explaining the boundaries and streets of Jambai, as well as the importance of mapping technique. She also showed us the maps they had made and described the different street names, festivals, and associated belief systems. She explained about the street documentation and discussed the interventions in detail. Ar.Hiranya also discussed on student’s site,’ Manjakollai’ that the students intended to visit and gave guidance on how to research and document the intangible aspects of the village.
One day trip to Pondichery, Auroville, Tamil house in French town, and to Vasanth villa in French town, which was a conserved 300 year old project. We got to know about the Victorian tiles and also a prototype of laying the madras terrace roof was taught here.
“It is not going to be an architectural session rather a philosophical one !!” The dialogue started with addressing Malayalam movie named ‘mathilukal’ conferring how walls can also hear and speak. He was accompanied with Siva Raj, who runs an unconventional school at the foothills of Thiruvanamalai named ‘CUCKOO’. He emoted on how an imbalance is created in the society in terms of hierarchy and negligence.
It was more of an interactive session where we expressed our views towards the place and its surroundings. “ I perceive them as actors and not as mere elements - so that we easily get connected to the building and its history “After many interchanges of ideas, each of us came up with different perspectives in viewing and feeling the building and its heritage that enhanced our emotional connectivity towards it.
